Wimbledon Introduces Video Replay System This Season.

Wimbledon tennis court with video review system

Wimbledon will follow the US and Aussie Opens in utilizing replay technology.

Video review technology are set to arrive at Wimbledon in the upcoming tournament.

Competitors will gain the option to question certain calls from the official, following the protocol currently in use at both the American Grand Slam and the Aussie major.

This technology will be operational on Centre Court and Court One for the duration of the Championships and on the other four featured courts when they are staging singles contests.

This step follows just a season following the AELTC implemented electronic line calling, which effectively ended the centuries-old tradition of line judges.

Reviewable Decisions

Competitors cannot to challenge the call of the ELC system, but are allowed to request the umpire to review other situations, including:

  • If a ball has double-bounced.
  • If a shot made contact with an opponent's racquet or person during play.
  • Possible interference end of a rally.

Importantly, there is no limit on the number of reviews a player can request.

Practical Application

A recent example occurred in a recent tournament recently, where a top player used the review system against his opponent.

The British player admitted it was a difficult situation for the umpire, but thought his rival had "used the regulations quite well."

Official Aurelie Tourte viewed a replay and determined the player was responsible for hindrance, granting the point to his opponent.

Wider Implementation

This technology are not new for Grand Slams. It has been in use at the American major for two years and the Aussie Open since 2025.

Additionally, it is increasingly prevalent on the WTA circuit, and by next season the men's ATP Tour plans to have the system implemented at all of its events.

Further Updates

A further change at Wimbledon this year will be the addition of visual indicators on scoreboards to support the verbal announcements from the ELC system.

This solves situations where the crowd have sometimes been unsure whether a shot was out or in.

Finally, with exactly a century of days remaining until the start of the Championships, organizers have further revealed an expansion in daily capacity at the qualifiers in the qualifying venue.
